REVIEW (EP): Touch – Miss A

Miss A always seems to be on the cusp of greatness. Yet despite their rapid ascent into K-pop’s elite something always seems to prevent Fei, Jia, Min and Suzy from entering that rarified air of superstardom, a la Girls’ Generation or the Wonder Girls.

With some artists, the problem might be their material. That doesn’t seem to be the issue here; Park Jin Young has continuously penned a string of feisty pop/R&B gems for the group, all while catering to the quartet’s rebellious yet playful nature. And he continues to do so admirably in Touch, Miss A‘s 4th release under his JYP Entertainment imprint. The unconventional title track – with its eerie synths and oddball choreography – is definitely not as in-your-face as the group’s prior hits, but what it lacks in punch it makes up for with memorable hooks (2PM‘s Heartbeat, anyone?) and shadowy eccentricity. Interestingly enough, the slowed-down Newport Mix of the single is arguably the stronger of the two versions, as the extra sprinkle of minor chords and marching drums add an element of painful intensity that seems to be missing from the glossy performance edition.

And when Park happens to reach out for songwriting and production assistance, he gets contributions that are strong and in character – Fuego (Chris Brown’s Turn Up The Music, Jason DeRulo’s Whatcha Say) gets the girls to absolutely sizzle the dance floor with Lips, while Over U and No Mercy exude heaps of that trademark syncopated drum sass we’ve come to expect from the foursome.

Miss A‘s problem doesn’t lie with the goods they are given, it lies with the members themselves. All four are relatively competent singers, with remarkably comparable voices. And although JYP does a good job keeping these ladies in their respective vocal lanes – breathy tones, easily bendable soul stylings and no over-extended notes – their delivery can only reach a certain level. Look at Rock N Rule, for example – the song is enjoyable enough and filled with sing-a-long Teen Nick sweetness, but any girl group today can pull that whole rigmarole off. Taking that point further, can you imagine how much more effective lead single Touch would be if it were sung by an artist/artists that had more vocal prowess? Singers that could take any number of vocal liberties, like some compelling adlibs or a mind-blowing power note or two?

Collectively, Miss A is a capable vocal group wrapped in a pretty Idol package. JYP continues to pull rabbits out of his hat with artistic and conceptual ideas, but it remains to be seen where he can take this quartet with a seemingly limited ceiling.

I have to agree, their songs are great but I feel as if something is missing.
I mean they have identical vocals so it’s hard to distinguish who’s singing which parts and some songs could have been better but due to their vocal range there isn’t a specific part that makes you go “Wow! that was amazing”.

However, I still like their song “Lips and Touch”. I do have to say that the first time I heard “Touch” I was actually disappointed because there wasn’t a “Wow” factor. Regardless, of that it was a pretty decent mini album.

Wow, you’re exactly right. I think people recognize the songs more than the group. They’re good performers but they dont have that extra oomph.

As always, Ray-Ray’s review is SPOT ON!  Miss A’s songs are always good, sometimes great even……but they lack a *wow* factor.  They are the type of group that are pretty good at everything they do, but not super-duper awesome or anything like that.  I think it has more to do with the concepts that JYP puts together for them.  :-/

I thought “Touch” was dull the first few times I listened to it, but it’s definitely grown on me…..although I do like the Newport mix better.  “Lips” should’ve been the song they promoted first!

Nice review. I agree. Miss A’s is a really disapointing in group in the fact that you feel they’re not giving their best in what they do. Their dance skills have decreased (like TOP’s haha) since debut and their vocal never improved. I adore Touch but I thought the whole album was just plain boring and didn’t sound at all like a “top” artist. I mean, once you’ve listen to Spica’s album…. this one is pale in comparison.
he reviewer mentionned Touch being sung by a more powerfull vocal group, well I think had Spica sung it, it could have been the/a song of the year. Too bad… it feels to be a bit of a waste to give Miss A such a song that’s is dividing their own fans furthermore.

Their EP was underwhelming when compared with all the recent comebacks lately and their previous releases. Touch was pretty chill and mellow unlike their usual upbeat style. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the album and I’m sure it’ll grow on me :)

I thought this was an interesting concept, but I do agree – something is definitely lacking. And it also doesn’t help that they all sound the same = =

Touch is nice, but it’s definitely not their strongest song. I really enjoyed Lips and No Mercy so yeah.

    the same thing I thought!
I quite like the album, but these days many artists released new projects, and I think that many new albums are better than miss A’s new one (Miryo, Se7en, Spica…)
The title song is very nice, I really like it, but in all the songs, especially in this one, they show no improvements in singing.. nothing new also in the choreography!

It sucks that Miss A is getting a lot of flack for “Touch” being boring.  I think it’s a nice change of pace from everything out right now.  Ray-Ray is spot on though…Miss A seems to lack something…I’m not sure what it is?
